Part life-coach, part Machiavelli, part Yoda, Balthasar Gracian [1601-1658], a Jesuit priest, wrote this collection of pithy sayings four centuries ago. Gracian speaks to the twenty-first century as well as the seventeenth. It's only a matter of time before someone markets Gracian's life advice to busy executives, like Sun Tzu or the Book of Five Rings (if it hasn't been already). In the meantime, Gracian can be our little secret.

Rules for Harmonious Living

Rule for harmonious living – Dalai Lama

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three Rs:

  • Respect for self

  • Respect for others

  • Responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Classical Music and Life

This is a great little TED talk I found through Stumble.  It offers great insights that could result in a person becomming a fan of the art form, but more importantly, it offers a profound message about life.  How many pairs of shining eyes do you have around you?  You'll be glad you checked this one out!

Don't Worry, Be Happy

Hey folks!  I was just sitting back in my living room and I had a quick flashback (no, not an acid one) about a song that had GREAT impact in my life.  Bobby McFerrin -- Don't worry, Be happy.  I just shared it with my kids and while listening to it, I had a realization of how profound it actually is.  The fact is, most of what we worry about NEVER occurs.  So stop worrying and check out this quick video.  And don't fault me for revisiting the 80's ;-).

8 New Ways to Keep Your Brain Fit

I recently read an intriguing report on trends in brain fitness, by SharpBrains, a market research company focused on applications of brain research. It predicted more brain-health offerings in senior living communities and health clubs, development of programs that combine physical and mental fitness into one workout and broad-based government initiatives along the lines of JFK's emphasis on physical fitness in the early 1960s. Just as exercise was the rage in previous decades, today's boomers are embracing strategies to boost memory, sharpen concentration and fine-tune the brain's ability to process information.

Urgent PSA

While I have no intention of making this blog political, something has come to my attention that is a bit disheartening.  On yesterday, I received a flier on my car which looked very official.  It stated that this years election is expected to be the largest in generations (as far as voter turnout).  It continued to say that in order to control the overcrowding and make things run smoother, that republicans should turn out on the 4th to vote, and all registered democrats have been designated to vote on the 5th.  Now, I obviously saw this for what it was...not to mention that I early voted anyway.  But my concern is that there are a lot of people who would read this and think it was official.  Here is the fact:

REGARDLESS OF PARTY AFFILIATION, YOUR LAST DAY TO VOTE IS THE 4th.

I'm not concerned with promoting any particular party or candidate...but remember, no matter who wins, it will be a historic outcome (a la Obama and Palin).  So make sure you do vote and put your touch on history.

Happy Halloween

Okay...so today is Halloween and as a parent, I was trying to do something creative for my kids.  Well, one of the things I decided to do was to share a "blast from my past" with them by showing them the original "Thriller" video by Michael Jackson.  They had never seen it and I thought it would be fun to revisit something that I enjoyed at their age.  We did watch the video, but in addition to the original, I found a quite faithful reproduction done with Legos...YES!  Legos.  If you have not seen this, check it out...if you remember Thriller, it will definitely have you smiling.  Have a great day!

Men & Women are from Earth...NOT Venus or Mars!

Too often, I hear both men and women making arbitrary comments and generalizations about each other. It seems that being so focused on our differences has limited the possibility in discovering how much alike we all are as human beings. In fact, a lot of the differences in the way men and women behave -- in my opinion -- are cultural, and not biological at all. Ms. Deborah Tannen seems to be one of the few authors who "gets" this fact and writes from the perspective of helping the sexes (particularly those involved in relationships) learn how those cultural differences work to divide...and how to overcome those external influences and "status quo" encouraged posturing and positioning. Ms. Tannen has graciously provided a condensed version of her best selling book, "You Just Don't Understand", and you can read it here! Learn to understand the opposite sex better TODAY! Also, see the left column of this site to be linked directly to her book on Amazon.
